The COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana is part of the global coronavirus disease pandemic of 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by the coronavirus 2 that causes extreme acute respiratory syndrome. On March 12, 2020, the first two cases in Ghana were confirmed when two infected people arrived in Ghana, one from Norway and the other from Turkey.
March 2020 saw the first reported cases and an initial response from Ghana's government. There were joint meetings between major stakeholders, as well as training sessions for teachers and other practitioners on how to deal with alleged cases of novel COVID-19. Bans on school events, bans on all social gatherings, and a temporary lockdown and limits on people's movements in Ghana's Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions were among the measures implemented by Ghana's President on March 15, 2020.
In March, cases were recorded in Greater Accra, Ashanti, and the Upper West regions. Ghana's first two confirmed cases were declared at an emergency press conference on March 12, 2020 by Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu (in Accra). The two cases were citizens who had returned to Ghana from Norway and Turkey, making them the country's first COVID-19 cases. These two cases were the catalysts for Ghana's first touch tracing initiative. One of the first two cases registered in Ghana involved a senior officer from the Norwegian Embassy in Ghana who had returned from Norway, and the other involved a staff member from the UN offices in Ghana who had returned from Turkey.
